Facts About Ambulatory Surgery

Also known as outpatient same-day surgery, ambulatory surgery now accounts for more than 50% of all surgical procedures performed in the United States. The first Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) opened in U.S. in 1970. Today, nearly ten million surgeries are performed each year at more than 4,000 ASC facilities across the country.

Quality of care, convenience and the containment of healthcare costs are among the many benefits of outpatient surgery. Patients receive quality healthcare under safe conditions at an ASC facility. Ambulatory Surgery Centers are among the most highly regulated providers in the healthcare industry and undergo stringent state and federal inspections. Surveys have also shown that patients prefer ASC’s to hospital outpatient departments because there is less paperwork, lower costs, and often offer a more convenient location with better parking. The surveys also noted that there was no waiting at an ASC facility and that the staff was more organized and friendlier compared to that of a crowded, uncomfortable hospital setting.

Because Ambulatory Surgery Centers concentrate on same-day procedures, they are also generally less expensive than a hospital. Self-pay patients and those undergoing elective surgeries such as cosmetic surgery are better able to afford a procedure if the facility cost is more economical. A procedure performed at an ASC may cost 30 - 60% less than if done in a hospital. Surgery centers provide the same high-quality health care as hospitals, but at a lower cost because they have a substantially lower overhead. At an ASC, the focus is on only one thing -- treating ambulatory surgery patients efficiently.
